The U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Embassy in Croatia administer a variety of exchange programs to the United States at the high school, academic (pre-doctoral and post-doctoral), and professional levels. High School Exchange Scholarship

Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellowship

The Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellowship is an intensive short-term exchange program, created to foster relationships among young Europeans and Americans.  The five-week program enables Croatian students ages 16-18, to explore U.S. foreign policy priorities such as youth engagement, support for democracy and civil society, and economic prosperity. Competition for the Fellowship usually opens in January and is posted on the Embassy’s website and social media channels.

Academic Exchanges and Scholarships

Academic exchanges and scholarships administered by the U.S. Embassy in Zagreb are a part of the U.S. Government flagship Fulbright Fellowship Program. The Fulbright Program is administered in Croatia in partnership with the Croatian Ministry of Science and Education and the Agency for Mobility and EU Programs.

The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 under legislation introduced by former Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Today it is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Government with  more than 380,000 alumni from more than 160 countries. Learn more about Fulbright here.

Fulbright Foreign Student Program

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program (pre-doctoral student program) enables graduate foreign graduate students, young professionals, and artists to research and study in the United States for one year or longer at U.S. universities or other appropriate institutions.

Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program

The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program (post-doctoral scholar program) provides grants to approximately 850 foreign scholars from over 100 countries to conduct post-doctoral research at U.S. institutions for an academic semester up to a full academic year.

Fulbright Specialist Program 

The Fulbright Specialist Program has been initiated to provide short-term Fulbright grants abroad lasting between 2 and 6 weeks. Central to this program is the original Fulbright purpose of advancing mutual understanding, establishing long-term cooperation, and creating opportunities for institutional linkages.

  • 2019 Fulbright Specialist Program | October 22, 2018 - The Fulbright Specialist Program provides short-term Fulbright grants abroad lasting between 2 and 6 weeks. Applications accepted: November 2, 2018 – March 30, 2019.

Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program 

Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program brings accomplished mid‑level professionals to the United States for a 10-month combined academic (NON-DEGREE) and professional work. Fellowships are granted competitively to both public and private sector candidates with strong leadership potential and a commitment to public service. The U.S. Department of State’s Professional Fellows Program connects emerging leaders with government offices, public policy-oriented NGOs, private companies, and university departments for short-term, intensive fellowships designed to broaden their professional expertise.

The Young Transatlantic Innovation Leaders Initiative (YTILI)

YTILI is the U.S. Department of State’s flagship program for emerging entrepreneurs from Europe. The YTILI Fellowship Program engages young European entrepreneurs in a series of professional development and leadership activities designed to strengthen the transatlantic relationship and encourage European businesses, governments and civil society to develop innovation ecosystems.  Applications for YTILI are typically accepted from January-February .
